Becoming More Beautiful

About six months ago, I started thinking about dating again. After having a spouse pass away a few years ago, I knew that it was time for me to get back out there, date, and have a great time. However, it was a really difficult transition for me, and I knew that it would be hard to get back into the dating pool. To make the process easier, I turned to a spa and salon in my area to see what they could do for me. They did my hair, gave my skin a nice buffing, and made my nails look picture perfect. 5 Questions About Laser Treatment For Anti-Aging

Fred Lambert

Do you want to freshen your face without surgery? A laser treatment for anti-aging can reduce the appearance of line lines and give you a more youthful glow. If you're new to this type of therapy, take a look at what you need to know about your anti-aging options and laser treatments.

What Can Laser Therapy For Anti-Aging Do?

This type of treatment removes the top layer of facial skin and can stimulate collagen production. The result is fresher-looking skin, wrinkle or fine line reduction, and a more even tone. Laser therapy can also decrease the appearance of age spots or some types of scars.

What Can't Laser Treatments Do?

Even though this type of treatment has an anti-aging effect, it won't significantly lift your skin or reshape your face. You can achieve these types of results with a more invasive cosmetic procedure. If you're not sure what aesthetic changes are right for you, talk to your doctor about the options. The medical professional can review the benefits of laser treatments and the realities of this type of therapy.

Are All Laser Treatments the Same?

There are a few different types of laser therapy options. Every laser center, skin clinic, dermatologist, medi spa, or cosmetic surgeon won't offer the same types (or all of the) treatments. The most common types of therapies include CO2, Erbium, pulsed dye, fractional, and intense pulsed light (IPL) lasers. The specific type you choose depends on the availability of treatments, the doctor's recommendation, and the result you want to achieve.

Are There Special Prep Steps?

According to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), you should avoid medications that interfere with blood clotting for 10 days before your treatment appointment. These include prescription, over-the-counter, and natural or supplement types of medications. Smokers should stop smoking at least two weeks prior to the procedure date. Your medical provider can review any other prep steps that are necessary based on your overall health, health history, and lifestyle factors.

Does Laser Therapy Have A Long Recovery?

Unlike invasive surgeries, you won't need to stay home for days or weeks after the procedure. But you may not want to return to work, school, or other activities immediately. You may have swelling for 24 to 48 hours after laser resurfacing, itching or stinging for up to 72 hours, and peeling for five to seven days, according to the ASDS.

The ASDS also notes that it could take 10 to 21 days for your face to fully heal. While you don't need to stay home during this period, you should avoid sun exposure. You will need to moisturize your face regularly and avoid oil-containing makeup products after a resurfacing treatment.
